Bra and Tie Contest to aid in the fight against breast cancer
Aug 22, 2011
The annual contest, "Fancy Bras and Ties-Of-Support," is calling all creative minds to design a bra or tie and submit it into the competition, which was created to promote the annual Believe Walk, according to the Contra Costa Times.
Entries for the contest will be accepted until September 16, and the winners will be announced on September 30. The winner will receive a weekend trip to South Coast Winery, and second and third place will receive various prizes from downtown businesses, the media outlet reports.
"We saw people bring in their entries and share their stories," Beth Sanders, event chairwoman, told the news source. "It grew from a fun thing to quite a meaningful thing."
The Believe Walk is in its fourth year, and all the proceeds go to breast cancer research in hopes of creating positive breast cancer health news.
According to the Susan G. Komen organization, breast cancer will affect one in eight women in the U.S. at some point during their lifetime. It is recommended that women start to receive annual mammograms once they turn 40 years old. If someone has an extensive family history of the disease, however, they may want to start earlier.
