Freda Swigert is battling stage one breast cancer and stage two pancreatic cancer, but you might not know it if you met her. The strong-willed woman will be walking 389 miles to raise money for the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, according to ColumbiaMissourian.com
"My philosophy is that I can mask my pain with medication, but I cannot cure it," Swigert told the news source. "Maybe [the donations will] give someone a shot to cure it. Or to live pain-free."
Swigert is certainly familiar with the staggering effects cancer can have on a family. The Lincoln, Missouri resident's two aunts and father succumbed to the disease, and a third aunt was recently diagnosed with bone and liver cancer.
Although the walk will take 10 to 14 days, the 41-year-old is determined to achieve her goal for the center.
"It's the smiles on their faces," she said. "They pull a person through tough times."
The Ellis Fischel Cancer Center is a member of the University of Missouri Health Center. It was the first free-standing cancer institution of its kind west of the Mississippi River, and the second in the United States.
