Breast cancer survivor donates $10.5 million to new research center

One thankful breast cancer survivor gave her alma mater a huge donation to fund a breast cancer research center, according to BUtoday.com.

Shamim Dahod and her husband, Ashraf, donated a whopping $10.5 million to the Boston University School of Medicine in 2008. They are making themselves public now and announcing the development of the Ashraf Dahod Breast Cancer Research Center.

Dahod, who previously battled breast and thyroid cancer, was treated at a different medical center. However, she and her husband graduated from the prestigious Boston institution years ago.

"If you look at Boston, you find that care and treatment can be very different depending on your social status. We could have made this gift elsewhere, but no other place in this city serves the same population that BMC does," she told the news source.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, over 190,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, the last year for which statistics are available.

"I got the best of treatment. But everybody's not that fortunate," Dahod told the news outlet.ADNFCR-2795-ID-19779684-ADNFCR
