For the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer held on July 9 and 10 in San Francisco, the Heffernan Group, an independent insurance brokerage firm, sent the second largest team to the event.
The Heffernan team, which dubbed themselves Team Ta Ta Sisterhood, was comprised of 42 women. The group was not only the second largest in size at the Bay Area event, but also in fundraising.
Over two days, the women walked 39.3 miles and raised over $80,000 to support breast cancer breakthroughs. News of the success has inspired Team Ta Ta Sisterhood to participate in the event in 2012. A team from the insurance firm has taken part in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk San Francisco every year since 2008.
"I could not be more proud of the team, their dedication to the cause, and their efforts in training and fundraising," said Michelle Lonaker, a walk participant and the director of corporate philanthropy at Heffernan.
According to the American Cancer Society, there are more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, including women who are still being treated and those who have completed treatment.
