First Lady of Chicago lends name to Women's Cancer Center

At the dedication ceremony for the new Maggie Daley Center for Women's Cancer Care, Chicago's first lady and the center's namesake spoke about the ways that kindness and compassion can help patients overcome breast cancer.

Daley, the wife of Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley, has been battling breast cancer since 2002, and has been confined to a wheelchair since she began radiation treatment for a bone tumor in her leg, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The 66-year-old first lady said the fact that the new Women's Cancer Center at Northwestern Memorial's Prentice Women's Hospital carriers her name "honored [her] more than anyone will ever know."

Speaking of the value of the center to the Chicago community, Daley told the news source, "It has been said too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."

She expressed confidence that patients at the new facility will be treated with the utmost care, "both medically and emotionally."

The Maggie Daley center will be a two-floor facility that offers a healing boutique, physical therapy, table massage and a lake view in its 11 private chemotherapy rooms.ADNFCR-2795-ID-19732537-ADNFCR
