Friends participate in breast cancer walk in honor of loved one

Sara and Adam Smith began the Breast Friends Foundation in 2006, and dedicated themselves to helping in the battle against breast cancer. The subject hit especially close to home for the couple.

The Boston Globe reports that Smith had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, 10 days after Adam had proposed to her. Sara fought the disease, but passed away in September 2009.

Adam, along with other members of the Breast Friends, continues to honor her memory and those of individuals who have lost their battle with the disease by participating in a walk along Marblehead Neck in Massachusetts. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the event, which will take place on October 3.

Last year the walk raised $37,000 to benefit Mass General Hospital's Breast Cancer Patient Support Fund. Participants are expected to make a minimum $20 donation and will receive a Breast Friends t-shirt for their contribution.

According to the American Cancer Society, there will be more than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the U.S. this year.
