Giuliana Rancic to receive double mastectomy
Dec 5, 2011
Giuliana Rancic announced that she is opting for a double mastectomy after her lumpectomy did not completely get rid of the breast cancer, according to People Magazine.
The 36-year-old E! host explained that the most drastic option was what she and her husband Bill wanted. It wasn't just the fact that the radiation would have slowed down the process of trying to have a baby, something they have been publicly struggling with for some time.
"Bill said to me, 'I just need you around for the next 50 years, kid,'" she said on the Today Show on Monday morning. "He said, 'I don't care what you look like, I don't care about the physical portion of this. I just need you around for the next 50 years. So, let's just get you healthy.' And that certainly helped me come to a decision."
According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during her lifetime. Not only is it the second most common form of cancer among women behind skin cancer, but it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer.
