Largest Komen advocacy conference to be held in Fort Worth
Mar 25, 2011
The weekend of March 25 marks the annual Susan G. Komen for the Cure Affiliate Leadership Conference, to be held in Fort Worth, Texas, according to the Star Telegram.
While events associated with the Komen breast cancer foundation happen all over the country, this conference is the largest event in the world for Komen members.
Nancy Brinker, the founder and CEO of Komen, is already in Fort Worth to rally the more than 1,000 activists who have joined her from all over the world.
Brinker's words are always inspiring and this occasion is no different. When asked about the current state of the battle against breast cancer, Brinker said the following:
“You bet we’re winning. The five-year survival rate has increased from 74 percent in the 1980s to 98 percent today. ...We need more pink and we need pink to be more powerful."
The Komen foundation is famous for having been founded as a promise that Brinker made to her dying sister. Brinker, who herself survived breast cancer, went on to turn an initial sum of $200 into a $1.9 billion global foundation.
