Miss USA uses her star power to support breast cancer awareness

Miss USA, Alyssa Campanella, recently visited Boston, Massachusetts, to support breast cancer awareness, The Boston Globe reports.

The New Jersey native made her way to the hub to advocate for breast cancer research and promote the 19th annual Susan G. Komen Massachusetts Race for The Cure. The disease affects millions of families worldwide, even Campanella's - her grandmother was diagnosed with the disease and has since been given a clean bill of health.

"I've always supported breast cancer awareness," Campanella told the publication. "When a relative of mine got diagnosed with it, I think it really kicked into full gear that, wow, you know what, it can affect anybody."

During her brief stay in Boston, Campanella spoke on several local TV and radio stations to promote this weekend's race. She also volunteered her time, helping make boxes of labels, bib numbers and T-shirts that will be handed out to more than 6,000 racers on Sunday.

BreastCancer.org reports that breast cancer death rates are higher than any other form of cancer in the U.S. besides lung cancer. Raising money toward finding a cure is crucial to saving more lives in the future.
