Anne Thompson, an NBC news correspondent and breast cancer survivor, will share her experiences during the annual Pink Zone luncheon at Thompson's alma mater, Notre Dame University, according to the South Bend Tribune
Thompson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and after a year-long battle with the disease, she is now in remission. She is the chief environmental correspondent for NBC news and was one of the first reporters on the scene during the BP oil spill.
The event will coincide with the yearly Pink Zone women's basketball game where Notre Dame players raise money for breast cancer awareness
. The theme of this year's luncheon is Docs in Pink. The organizers hope to recognize the accomplishments of doctors and researchers during the luncheon.
The Notre Dame women's basketball team has done exceedingly well in fundraising for the Pink Zone initiative, accumulating almost $150,000 for the effort. The proceeds will go to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Pink Zone initiative.
According to BreastCancer.org, there are over 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
