Nantucket gears up for October
Aug 29, 2011
The island Nantucket, which is off of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is developing local fundraising in order to help those who are suffering from breast cancer. The events will take place during the month of October, according to the Boston Globe.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Nantucket will be offering T-shirts, pink cocktails and cupcakes during events throughout the month. The White Elephant Resort has developed a pink T-shirt, and all the proceeds from the sales of the shirt will go to breast cancer research, according to the news source.
In addition, a number of hotels and resorts will be donating to the cause, including $1 for every room rented to the Marla Ceely Lamb Fund, which helps residents who suffer from the disease with finances, the media outlet reports.
According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will eventually be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. The disease is the second leading cancer-related cause of death among women, following only lung cancer.
