One local North Carolina photographer is using her gift to spread breast cancer awareness
, The Charlotte Observer reports.
Karen Goforth decided to do something about breast cancer a few years back when one of her employee's sister was diagnosed with the disease. Goforth began photographing local survivors and started to learn about their individual stories.
Shortly after, Goforth founded Focused on a Cure, a nonprofit organization set up to raise awareness and hope for breast cancer patients and survivors.
"Over the past two years, I have heard amazing stories of families and communities pulling together to fight breast cancer, and photographing these incredible women just made sense to me," Goforth said.
Focused on a Cure will be holding its largest fundraiser to date called Piggin' Out for Pink. Here, Goforth will reveal her 2011 exhibit which will showcase 15 survivors from around the area.
"A lot of these stories are so inspiring when you read them," Goforth told the news source. "It's moms and daughters and two sisters and they all have breast cancer. It's just so many people that are being diagnosed more than ever now."
Raising awareness and hope is crucial in the fight against the disease that is predicted to affect one in eight women in her lifetime, according to BreastCancer.org.
