Relay for Life cancer advocates use music to inspire

This June, teams of supporters who will be participating in the 2010 Relay for Life event in Weymouth, Massachusetts, will be marching in harmony as the event opens with a jam session aimed at energizing those walking for cancer research and awareness.

The music will set the tone for the charity walk and introduce the theme for this year's event, "A Cure for Cancer Will Be Music to Our Ears: Let Weymouth Top the Charts!," Wicked Local Weymouth reports.

As part of the opening jam session, attendees are invited to write the names of cancer survivors and victims on paper musical notes, which will be attached to a banner displayed throughout the event.

In addition, teams of walkers are encouraged to select a theme song for their groups, on which they may base the decorations for their tents and costumes.

"We want to have fun with the theme," Relay for Life chair and cancer survivor Annmarie Murphy told the news source.

She added, "We want to get people enthused and excited for Weymouth's fifth Relay."

Relay For Life takes place each year in about 5,000 communities throughout the U.S.
