Rescue U builds shelter in Pennsylvania

When Petfinder.com Foundation's Rescue U arrived at the Cameron County SPCA, a shelter building project kicked into high gear. Students from Delaware Valley College and Pennsylvania high schools worked with local volunteers to pour concrete, add fences, plumb the interior to set up bathing and vetting areas, and build raised beds and toys for the incoming animals.

Prior to Rescue U's arrival in August and the completion of the shelter, this local SPCA didn't have enough room to adequately serve the needs of local homeless pets.

"The inside of the shelter was little more then framed wood when we got here,"  said Denise Bash, Rescue U founder. "Now, the walls are insulated, up and hung, the drywall is finished. The transformation is amazing."

Just as amazing, she reported, was the constant stream of local volunteers who stopped by to help the students.

"One example of this dedication comes from local Humane Police Officer George Sowers, who has spent hours working side-by-side with us in between his calls," said Bash.

The trip to Pennsylvania was the third Rescue U trip of 2011. Previously, students from the program visited South Carolina in January and Kentucky in May.

Rescue U’s next trip  will take the program to Guthrie, Oklahoma, to help that town rebuild their shelter, which was flattened by a tornado in May.

GreaterGood.org supports Rescue U through contributions from The Animal Rescue Site’s Gifts That Give More program.
