Son of a mother living with breast cancer creates T-shirt to raise money
Aug 24, 2011
Brett and Krista are the son and daughter of Karen Beebe, who has been fighting breast cancer since 2005. The two college students have been doing everything in their power to raise money for the hope of positive breast cancer news, according to the Manhattan Beach Patch.
Brett started a T-shirt design, which he sells for $15 with a logo that states "Long Hair Don't Care." It has raised $14,000 so far and been worn by sport stars such as Houston Texans quarterback Matt Leinhart and Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson, the media outlet reports.
In addition, Brett usually spends the majority of his time at his school in Michigan due to hockey. However, he hurt his shoulder this past season, and his coaches let him go home for the summer.
"[My coaches] say everything happens for a reason," Brett told the news source. "I think my reason had to do with helping my mom."
According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the U.S. will eventually be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during their lifetime. This disease is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, following only lung cancer.
