Summit Medical Breast Cancer Center provides support
Jun 2, 2011
Summit Medical Group's Breast Cancer Center of Excellence is offering an exercise program for breast cancer survivors starting in June of this year. The group will focus on stretching and strength exercises in order to ensure that cancer survivors stay fit and able to progress physically as they battle their illness.
The exercise and fitness events will be led by a breast cancer specialist as well as a licensed social worker from the Summit Medical Group. Newly diagnosed women with breast cancer are welcome to join the center, the only one of its kind in New Jersey that has been certified by the National Consortium of Breast Centers.
Exercise, whenever possible for breast cancer patients, is crucial for maintaining physical strength. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, exercise helps one sleep as well as maintain a more positive mood.
More than 200,000 women are diagnosed with the illness each year in America. All women over the age of 40 in the U.S. should have annual mammograms, according to the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer has the second highest death rate among cancers in women; lung cancer has the highest.
