Tom Mitchell, a staff member of Veterans Village of San Diego, created this video about the true meaning of Memorial Day.
“It is a tribute to the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan. And, to their family and friends who bear the pain and sorrow of their loss. We cannot forget them,” said Phil Landis, President and CEO of VVSD.
Since 1981, VVSD has been dedicated to the mission “Leave No One Behind,” providing national leadership in creating programs to serve homeless veterans.
The “Stand Down” movement began here and VVSD will host their 25th Stand Down for homeless veterans in July 2012. During a Stand Down, hundreds of homeless veterans are welcomed into the tents, given meals, showers, and medical attention. They can meet with counselors, learn about veterans benefits that they are entitled to, and receive additional assistance in accessing services available.
Besides providing food, clothing, housing, and counseling, their job training programs help homeless and unemployed veterans secure long-term jobs.
