Volunteers and philanthropists benefit breast cancer awareness at the annual Chefs' Auction

Good food is sure to draw a crowd, so when the American Cancer Society's Breast Cancer Research Program decided to host a fundraiser, they turned to some of the best eateries in the city to provide mouthwatering options for their silent auction.

Gourmets mingle and bid on everything from casual dining options like a "Meals on Wheels" barbecue at Fox's Restaurant and Pub to a more upscale dining experience at Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant, according to the South Town Star.

The news source reports that over the past 10 years the event has raised more than $150,000 for breast cancer research.

"It was my husband's cancer that really got me," volunteer Vangie Johnson told the news provider. "When someone you love goes through cancer, the whole family goes through it."

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly one in eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in their life, and there are over 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.
