Wisconsin volleyball tournament raises $18,000 for breast cancer

The Dig for a Cure volleyball tournament has raised more than $18,000 for breast cancer awareness and research in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Luther Midelfort Mayo Health System joined with Charter Communications and the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire to put together the tournament in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month according to Wisconsin's WQOW.

The event is in its third year and raised about $6,000 in both 2008 and 2009. Twelve area high schools participated in the volleyball tournament and also hosted their own fundraisers and awareness programs.

"Obviously, the dollar amount is impressive, but I am most proud of the way that area volleyball programs joined together to help raise awareness about a disease that has affected so many of our athletes' and coaches' families," said University of Wisconsin Blugold's volleyball coach Kim Wudi.

The group also hosted the Blugold's Dig for a Cure night in which they took the opportunity to pass out information, host a Q&A with health care professionals and sell pink t-shirts and other items to spread breast cancer awareness.

According to the American Cancer Society, excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women.
