Whether they are facing a serious medical crisis such as breast cancer, caring for a sick parent, or simply taking the necessary time off after the birth of a child, most women in the U.S. must choose between taking unpaid leave, trying to combine work with family duties, or quitting the workforce.
Only 12 percent of workers get paid time off to care for a baby or a sick parent, according to the U.S. Labor Department. Less than 40 percent of the workforce has personal medical leave via an employer-provided disability program.
Sponsored by Rep. Rosa De Lauro (D--Conn.) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D--N.Y.), the FAMILY Act would ensure hard working citizens would receive some income during family or medical leave. Tell Congress to stand with Lauro and Gillibrand and support passage of this critical legislation.
The U.S. is one of the few remaining countries that does not support the health of its hard-working citizens in this manner. The time to act is now.

The United States is one of a handful of countries in the world that doesn't offer paid leave to new mothers. That needs to change.
Over the course of our lives, we all may need time off to care for a new baby or deal with a serious medical problem. The Family And Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act is a national paid family and medical leave insurance program that would provide workers with up to 12 weeks of paid leave.
