20 years surviving

On July 15, 1993 I was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of Breast Cancer. I was in total shock although I knew before the doctor came into the room with the diagnosis. You see, I was used to self examination on a regular basis and knew immediately that this lump was different from all the usual lumps I seemed to produce on a regular basis. I started to have lumps removed from the time I was 25. Usually they were fibroid or cysts, I had had a mammogram 10 months before and now I had this hard pea in my breast. I went to the doctor the next day and was sent for a diagnostic mammogram and then to the surgeon who did a frozen section and then the diagnosis that changes your life. Cancer! Such a large word. My family is riddled with Breast Cancer, even an uncle. When I went home that day I started to decide who would get what. Yes, I was preparing to die but my wonderful doctor told me that he was going to do everything in his power to keep me alive. Starting with a double mastectomy and then chemo. Chemo is such a scary word. I had 2 positive lymph nodes and non-invasive cancer in the other breast. I was so fortunate because people I didn't even know showed up to take me to chemo and other appointments. It is so important to have a support group.

July 15, 2013 is 20 years surviving. I am so grateful that I did survive. I got to see my grandson born. He will be 13 on July 14 and sings in the All American Boys Chorus. My other grandson just finished 4 years in the Army. I could have missed all of this if I didn't self exam. I tell everyone, "know your breasts!" It can save your life.

I am not a religious person but have a very strong spiritual life and know that God is with me and has been through this journey. A good sense of humor also doesn't hurt.
