My Wild Ride

I have had mammograms since I was in my 30's... All clear! Last summer (I was 60) I had my mammogram. A few days later, I received a call for a redo. No big deal! Then the radiologist came in and said I had tiny calcifications in a cluster. Probably nothing, but she recommended a biopsy to be sure. I did. Then, that phone call that feels like a tsunami just hit you.

The surgeon did a lumpectomy only to come up with one clear margin out of four. She was only willing to do one more lumpectomy and wanted me to go home and think about the course I would take. Something hit me in a flash of clarity, and I opted for a bi lateral mastectomy on the spot.

After surgery my surgeon told me it was the right decision, as the cancer was getting ready to proliferate. Whatever the flash of clarity was, wherever it came from, I am thankful. Also, I have been blessed with an amazing radiologist and surgeon, and a host of family and friends taking care of me.

I am a survivor!
